A Government Too Broken to Fix?
I thought about writing on the Carrie Prejean / Miss America debacle, where she was asked her opinion, she gave a thoughtful answer, and was blasted for not supporting same sex marriage. The question was out of character for that contest, and was not a test of her composure, but was a test of her political correctness. Shameful. So now I guess I've written about it...
But what's on my frazzled mind today is that our government is so insanely broken that I totally understand people who think it's time to throw out both parties and start over. Here's why...
The President who won election by promising that there would be full disclosure of all torture information (which was stupid) has now flip-flopped to withhold that information because he finally realized what most of us peons already knew: that information poses a danger to our military and our security.
And Obama has also flip-flopped on his promise to move from military commission trials to the regular court system for war-on-terror detainees. It's another case of "tell them anything to get elected, then change when you've been elected." The reviled Rush Limbaugh predicted as much prior to the election. He said we'd hear the excuse, "We didn't have all the facts when we made that promise." Well, duh! Are these the brightest and best people we can find for office? ...who don't anticipate the most predictable of situations before they make their grand promises?
So now the President is warning us about "unsustainable debt" and runaway inflation? WHAT?? Is he serious? He and his congress are spending money faster than the Treasury can print it, running up debts beyond belief, and setting us up for inflation... and he wants to warn us to watch out for the problem he's creating? I don't even understand that. Is he trying to distance himself from the consequences of his own policies? And are we as a people stupid enough to fall for that?
We who support the free market and limited government have been frustrated to the point of anger over the President's bail-out and hands-on management of the auto makers... as if he has a single day of personal business experience. So it comes as no surprise that our good trade partners to the north, the Canadians, are upset that the Obama Administration's bailout funds come with built-in protectionism that harms our free trade with Canada. (Didn't those Canadians hate Bush?)
And now Chrysler and GM dealerships - owners and salesmen right down the road from you and me - are being told, in the name of restructuring, that they will lose their dealership contracts. And Chrylser's advertising budget has been slashed by Obama.
So, let's see... We're going to help Chrysler by (1) reducing the number of places you can buy a Chrysler, and (2) limiting their ability to tell you about their product (which is now harder to find). So we're going to pour billions of tax dollars into a company, then make sure it cannot succeed.
And where to start on Nancy Pelosi? With clear proof that she knew about torture techniques from a Democrat-headed CIA, she blatantly lies to keep from looking like a hypocrite as she condemns the torture process that she knowingly said nothing about earlier. Nancy Pelosi is a dishonorable, dishonest, purely self-interested crackpot.
So I guess that means I'm totally supportive of the Republicans, right? Not a chance. At a time when stupidity abounds, they haven't stepped up to the plate with any differing vision, any delineation of important principles, any clear alternative, or even a strong explanation of their points of departure with the democrats. The Republican Party seems to be spineless and lacking in vision and passion.
We need to start over. And, unfortunately, I don't have a clue how that can be done.
