"fixed" windows: the playground looks very attractive and advertises that we serve children, the preschool ministers to area families and brings people without a church to H'boro, the landscaping and new sign are very attractive.

"broken" windows:

--we need to continue to seek ways to carry out our children's ministry in new and creative ways

--we need a preteen ministry (they are at such a pivotal point of their lives and we need to be there

--we need to station someone out in the parking lot, to help welcome and direct visitors

--we need to have some reserved guest parking spaces (maybe 3) that are marked well so visitors see them

--we need to consciously strive to incorporate new people into the life of the church (example: explicitly invite a new family to come with you to a church lunch, ask a newer person to serve with you during VBS, etc, etc).

Great observations, Mary. And it makes me think that there is probably a corollary to the Broken Windows Theory, that might be called the "Crown Molding" Theory. A house can sell for a lot more, just because someone took the time to put up some crown molding, or chair rail, or some other inexpensive detail. It does nothing to substantially change the structure of the house, but it sends a message that someone cared enough to go beyond the essentials. I would definitely say that our playground and our preschool are "Crown Molding."

Anyone else see a feature or ministry of our church that goes beyond the essentials to the point that it's a "Crown Molding" item?

When we first attended the church, for us, it was the people and how they responded to us that drew us in(of course the incredible preaching as well).....this could be the first line of defense or the second if you're looking at the esthetics as the first........I agree though that the church sign, the flowers in the front and the benches look very nice, we always comment on how lovely we think this church looks, especially with the picturesque setting it sits in........Probably need to finish painting or paint over the red paint(?) around the windows in the nursery.......
maybe some indication in signage(sp?) that everyone is welcome....walk-ins welcome......like you did last Sunday.....by the way, how many walk-ins did we have?......I know, I know if I had been there I would know already.......: ) Maybe signage that indicates what's going on i.e; sermon series, Mom's in Touch, Women's Bible Study, Youth activities, time/day, etc. What do you think???

Thanks, Kelly! We had 50 people in worship for our snowy "walk-in" service. I was surprised at the great response. We did have a few drive-ins, too.

Broken Windows:
-The gutter that started to fall off after the first snow storm.
-That unsightly team of pastors.
-A full-fledged welcoming crew. Feeling welcome "From the Street to the Seat" isn't happening.
-Space.

Solutions:
-Fix it. Things like that, when left for awhile, shows we don't take great care of what God has given us. I know the building isn't the church, but it's a resource we have been given and are called to be a great steward of them. Plus, the more it gets put off, the more of a insurance liability it becomes. I (or my car) wouldn't want to be impaled by a gutter.
-Not much we can do about those two goofballs. "Extreme Makeover" maybe?
-I've toyed with an idea in my head... We get an outsider, or an insider in good disguise, to come in and secretly video tape their welcome experience. They give testimony to what it feels like to go from their car door, to the seat, and back to the pew. Could be a wake-up call.
Other than that... I believe we need to have some sort of "team" that will be committed to pointing our guests in the right direction for Sunday School, Service, maybe showing them around? To welcome them in the parking lot, outside of the church, then to be welcomed inside of the church, then when they sit down, then when... you get the idea.
-Space is tricky. I know there are plans for a new building, but maybe we can do something temporarily that will maximize our "Curb Appeal." Currently, there is no real "lobby" area. That means if the Women's Ministry wanted to set up a table of resources, announcements, etc. we can't, unless they brave the weather. So some seasons we advertise, and some we don't. Perhaps, and this wasn't my idea but I like it so I'll promote it, we enclose the ramp and walkway in. Level that area, put down some carpet, have areas where you can get info on any ministry, have an area for new guests (they can pick up guest bags, we can get the info cards, talk with them one on one). Doing something like that would instantly bring our church's ministry's exposure level to greater heights.

Just some thoughts.
