In addition to the inspirational and motivational feedback in your blog, your "kick in the pants" thought about helping Bill out is right on the money! The Bauer's will definetly take you up on the parking in other areas so those coming to visit(especially) may find a place to park. We'll also commit to identifying new folks and welcoming them. That meant soooo much to us....it was Tommy and Bettye Thompson, in particular, who did that for us and I'll never forget it! As for seating, I know in some churches they televise the service in another room that members may go to and allow for visitors and new members especially to be able to participate in the sanctuary itself. Perhaps members would be willing to do this on rotation? Just a thought......I'll keep thinking. What a great dilemna we have and the God of the Universe will provide the wisdom and the way(s) to meet the needs of those He is bringing into the "fold". Thanks Al for being passionate about this. May God bless your passion and use it to ignite a desire/joy in all of us.

Thank you, Kelly. And, yes, there is a church just down the road from here - just past Wintergreen - that set up a separate worship area with a video feed and a large screen, and asked church members to rotate in and out of that alternative worship space. No one was in the main Sanctuary all the time, and no one was in the satellite location all the time. Another pastor friend of mine has talked about setting up a "coffee bar" worship area as their secondary site, where people worship around small tables with a large screen video feed. If we give God our spiritual passion, flexibility, and determined action, He'll continue to move us forward.

A coffee bar area....hmmmmm.....was that a divine inspiration??? Or just a coffee lover's wishful thinking?? Ha!

I admit to liking worship in the sanctuary--so cozy, so friendly, so intimate--but when I was thinking about this subject on the way to work this a.m., two thoughts popped into my mind.

First--every Sunday Ross and I go to a Thai restaurant in Belmont for lunch after church. As we are going down Water Street, we pass signs for the Portico Church, which apparently is housed in a building downtown that is used for another purpose during the week. And there are TONS of cars parked everywhere, with signs pointing to additional parking spots for the church. I don't know what that church is about (Hilary attended once or twice and said it is a contemporary worship service that is almost entirely singing) but clearly it is attracting a lot of participants AND THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT IN A TRADITIONAL SANCTUARY IS APPARENTLY NOT KEEPING PEOPLE AWAY.

The other thought that came to mind was Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Exodus mentions frequently that the Israelites had a hard time, despite the brutality of their slavery, leaving the comfort and security of the things they knew in Egypt--despite God's promise of blessings beyond belief in the promised land. It occurs to me that maybe when I am clinging to the comfort and security of the Hillsboro sanctuary, that I am inadvertently depriving myself and Hillsboro of blessings that we can't even imagine right now that God would bring to us if we left our comfort zone. We just (ha!ha! "just")have to have faith that God is leading us where we need to go and have patience as we await his abundant blessings.
